DBKL earmarks new location for Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple

City Hall said the move aims to ensure Hindu devotees can continue practising their religious activities comfortably and harmoniously

2:00 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has identified a new location for the relocation of the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple, situated near Jalan Masjid India.

In a statement today, DBKL said the move aims to ensure Hindu devotees can continue practising their religious activities comfortably and harmoniously.

“The relocation process will be conducted transparently and fairly, with discussions involving relevant stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation,” it said.

DBKL also acknowledged the proposed construction of a mosque on privately owned land in Jalan Masjid India.

“This matter has drawn attention as a small portion of the land is occupied by the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple.

“The project is a proposal by the private company that legally owns the land and is not initiated by the government.

“Nevertheless, DBKL, as the authority entrusted by the government, has taken proactive steps to find the best solution for all parties involved and to prevent discrimination against any community,” it said.

The Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple, located near Jakel Mall in Jalan Masjid India, was built in the late 19th century and now stands amid rapid urban development.

It is understood that the land housing the temple was sold to a private company that also owns a shopping centre in the same area.

Earlier, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif assured that DBKL would not undertake any demolition of the temple’s structure.

She said the temple would continue operating as usual until the relocation process is completed. – March 20, 2025
