MAHB to finalise Subang Airport flight slots after AirAsia exit

Airlines have two weeks to apply for available slots, with MAHB expecting to finalise allocations soon

7:53 PM MYT

PERTH — Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is set to finalise the selection of airlines, both local and international, to take over available slots at Subang Airport (SZB) following AirAsia’s move to consolidate its operations at KL International Airport (KLIA).

MAHB senior general manager of strategy, Megat Ardian Wira Mohd Aminuddin, said airlines have been given a two-week window to submit applications, with the final slot allocations expected in the coming weeks.

“The decision will determine which airlines will operate from SZB and what new routes will be introduced,” he said at the Routes Asia 2025 event in Perth, Australia.

AirAsia’s decision to consolidate its SZB operations into KLIA Terminal 2 (T2) has freed up five daily slots at Subang.

Megat Ardian expressed confidence in strong interest, particularly from international carriers, which could further enhance SZB’s connectivity and position it as a key regional travel hub.

MAHB is currently evaluating applications based on route demand and their potential impact on KLIA Terminal 1.

Discussions with the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) are also ongoing to determine which routes will be approved.

“As KLIA and Subang Airport share the same airspace, KLIA is always given priority. As flight operations at KLIA expand and more slots are added to accommodate growth, this directly impacts Subang’s airspace capacity.

“As a result, KLIA remains the priority, and flight slots at Subang are capped for now, limiting any further expansion of operations,” he said, addressing the potential for increasing Subang’s flight capacity.

Looking ahead, SZB’s development will focus on high-value aviation sectors such as maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services, business jet operations, and aerospace-related industries.

These areas align with global aviation trends and Malaysia’s broader aviation ambitions.

With Subang Airport’s recent expansion from a 1.5 million to a 3 million passenger capacity, the airport is now concentrating on jet operations, allowing up to 15 jet flights per day, one every hour.

On AirAsia’s future, Megat Ardian said MAHB is working with the airline on two key areas: growth and route expansion.

“We’re collaborating with them on their growth over the next five years. Based on upcoming aircraft deliveries, they have A321s and some A330s.

“They are also working with us to determine which routes to increase frequencies on and which new routes to introduce, aligning with our overall growth strategy,” he said. — March 26, 2025
