Putra Heights gas explosion: Higher Education Ministry rushes to aid affected students

Mobile clinics, financial aid, and mental health support deployed as disaster leaves destruction and panic in its wake

2:00 PM MYT

PUTRA HEIGHTS – The Higher Education Ministry (KPT) has taken swift action to assist students affected by the recent gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights, offering health services, mobile clinics, and financial aid to those impacted.

Speaking to Scoop, the ministry’s Secretary-General Datuk Dr Anesee Ibrahim explained that the initiative is aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of the victims.

“We are providing mobile clinics through the Public University Hospital Consortium (KHUAM) to deliver emergency treatment, health checks, and medical support to those requiring immediate care,” Dr Anesee said.

“At present, we have identified four affected students, and we anticipate identifying more in the coming days, should any individuals come forward to register for assistance. I believe some students may have returned home for Hari Raya celebrations, but we hope that the number of affected students remains limited,” he added, speaking at Masjid Putra Heights yesterday.

Furthermore, KPT has distributed an initial donation of RM2,000 to the affected students through the Perkasa Siswa Foundation (YPS).

To support those suffering from trauma, counselling and psychological support services have been arranged for students experiencing anxiety and emotional distress following the incident.

Additionally, volunteers from the Malaysian Public University Volunteer Council (MASKUM) have been deployed to assist with the recovery efforts and to meet the needs of those impacted by the fire.

Earlier on April 1, a massive explosion and fire erupted at a Petronas gas pipeline in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya, sending huge flames into the air and causing widespread panic.

The intense heat from the flames, which was felt kilometres from the site, reportedly melted plastic and rubber objects in a wide radius around the pipeline.

A total of 145 people were injured in the incident and are being treated at various hospitals, while 227 homes were affected—78 of which were completely destroyed.

Additionally, 365 vehicles were damaged, including 275 cars and 56 motorcycles. – April 3, 2025
