Putra Heights gas fire: 24 victims eligible to apply for rehabilitation equipment through Socso

Additional checks will be conducted for 88 victims who are currently receiving treatment at government hospitals

7:00 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – An initial assessment of the benefits provided by the Social Security Organisation (Socso) showed that 24 out of the 46 victims of the gas pipeline explosion are eligible to apply for support for rehabilitation equipment.

Socso chief executive, Datuk Seri Dr. Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed, said that the initial screening of the first group of tragedy victims took place on the second day of Syawal, adding that this screening was carried out for individuals who were admitted to hospitals and private clinics in the Klang Valley.

He also mentioned that additional checks will be conducted for 88 victims who are currently receiving treatment at government hospitals in Kuala Lumpur, Serdang, Selayang, Shah Alam, and Klang.

“It is understood that there were 134 victims involved in the tragedy in Putra Heights; therefore, Socso has conducted an initial assessment involving 46 people, while for the rest, we are waiting for official information from government hospitals.

“From the initial assessment, 24 victims are eligible to apply for rehabilitation equipment as stipulated under the Employees’ Social Security Act 1969 (Act 4).

“If they require the equipment, they can apply directly, and Socso is ready to assist in obtaining appropriate support and rehabilitation treatment,” he said in a statement.

Dr. Mohammed Azman elaborated that Socso is prepared to help all contributors to the Self-Employed Social Security Scheme (SKSPS) who were injured while working, as well as those under the Housewives’ Social Security Scheme (SKSSR) who were affected by the incident.

He emphasised Socso’s concern for the victims of the tragedy, noting that the Socso Prihatin Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Squad was on-site the day of the incident and has been visiting

“We are also ready to assist all victims through the Social Synergy Programme by providing information to other agencies so that they can receive appropriate assistance.

“Socso sympathises with the fate of the victims of the tragedy and prays that they will be able to overcome this difficult ordeal,” he said.

Yesterday, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari announced that Petronas will provide additional financial support of RM5,000 and RM2,500 to homeowners affected by the gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights, based on the level of damage to their homes.

He explained that the RM5,000 aid is for homes considered a total loss, while RM2,500 is for those that have sustained damage. This assistance is in addition to the support previously announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. With this new funding, homeowners whose properties are completely destroyed will receive a total of RM10,000, while those with damaged homes or tenants will each receive RM5,000. – April 8, 2025
