KUALA LUMPUR – Residents of Kampung Tengah, Puchong, who were still recovering from the gas pipeline fire that broke out on the second day of Aidilfitri, have now been hit by flash floods following continuous heavy rainfall last night.
Floodwaters began rising late Thursday and had yet to fully subside as of Friday morning, according to a live update shared by TikTok user Qal Luniey.
“During the gas pipeline fire, my house was also affected. The roof was badly damaged and leaking.
“I wasn’t at home at the time as I was in my hometown, but the house sustained damage,” she said, adding that she and her family had only returned home last Sunday.
Qal Luniey, who lives with three family members, said that as of 10am, floodwaters remained at knee level but were gradually receding. She added that the neighbourhood had previously experienced similar flooding, Bernama reported.
The fire on April 1 sent flames soaring over 30 metres high, with temperatures reaching up to 1,000°C. It took nearly eight hours for fire and rescue teams to extinguish the blaze.
The incident left 81 houses structurally damaged by more than 40 per cent, another 81 partially damaged, while 57 houses sustained other forms of damage without burning. A total of 218 homes, including some in Kampung Tengah, were left unaffected.
Meanwhile, the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department confirmed that several districts across the state were affected by Friday’s flash floods, including Petaling, Klang, Hulu Langat, Sepang and Gombak.
Assistant Director of Operations Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said floodwaters in parts of Petaling, including Kampung Tengah, reached 0.61 metres. About 20 houses in the area were affected, with six residents evacuated to a temporary relief centre at the Putra Heights Mosque.
“In Kampung Seri Aman, Puchong, 30 houses were flooded, affecting 120 victims,” he said in a statement.
In Shah Alam, 20 homes in Kampung Padang Jawa were inundated, resulting in the evacuation of three people. In the Klang district, flooding in Taman Sri Jaya prompted the evacuation of eight victims to a relief centre at SK Sungai Binjai, while 15 people were evacuated from Kampung Sungai Merab Luar in Kajang, Hulu Langat.
Shah Alam police chief ACP Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said police were deployed from 7am to monitor traffic in affected areas, including Taman Sri Muda, Padang Jawa and the Federal Highway motorcycle lane at KM15.3, which remains closed.
He said traffic flow in Shah Alam had since returned to normal as waters began to recede, with only light rain reported.
Separately, District Disaster Management Committee (JPBD) Petaling chairperson Huzunul Khaidil Mohammed said two more temporary evacuation centres (PPS) were opened to accommodate flood victims, Sinar Harian reported.
These included Dewan Kenangan MBSA in Section 28 for evacuees from Kampung Bukit Lanchong, and SK Seksyen 16 for residents from Kampung Padang Jawa.
“This incident is classified as a level one disaster in the affected areas and nearby. The PPS centres will remain in operation as long as necessary to ensure the safety and wellbeing of victims,” he said.
The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) in Selangor confirmed the floods were triggered by prolonged downpours affecting five districts, while flood warning sirens were activated in Taman Sri Muda at around 10am as river levels crossed the danger threshold.
Residents were advised to remain alert and prepare for potential evacuations. – April 11, 2025
