WhatsApp goes dark: Global outage leaves millions unable to send messages

Users in Malaysia, Singapore, India and beyond report widespread disruption as Meta remains mum on cause

KUALA LUMPUR – Popular messaging app WhatsApp experienced a major service disruption on the night of April 12, with users in Malaysia and several other countries reporting difficulties sending messages.

According to outage tracking platform Downdetector, the issue emerged around 10.30pm local time in Malaysia, where at least 597 reports were logged, local media reported.

Of those, 85% were related to message delivery, 12 percent cited general app functionality problems, and three percent were login issues.

So far, WhatsApp has not issued any official statement addressing the disruption.

Despite the widespread issue on WhatsApp, there have been no reports of similar outages affecting other Meta-owned platforms such as Facebook or Instagram.

In Singapore, Downdetector registered a sharp increase in complaints, peaking at 1,964 at 10.50pm. An earlier spike was also recorded at 7.50pm with nearly 400 reports, according to the Straits Times.

Similar problems were reported across the region. Downdetector’s Indonesia page noted 1,743 complaints as of 10.37pm.

Globally, the main Downdetector site recorded a peak of 3,291 user reports at 10.52pm.

In India, media outlets reported users being unable to send messages or update their statuses. Social media platform X was also abuzz, with users in India, Indonesia, and Vietnam sharing screenshots that showed messages marked with exclamation symbols, indicating delivery failures.

Meta has yet to clarify the cause of the outage or provide a timeline for full service restoration. – April 13, 2025
