PKR polls: Altimet clinches Ampang chief post as Fahmi drops veep bid to focus on central leadership

Emerging star secures key division while seasoned leader aims for strategic leadership post in the party's upcoming showdown

4:57 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Lembah Jaya assemblyman Syed Ahmad Abdul Rahman Alhadad, better known as Altimet, has secured a major win in the ongoing PKR party elections by clinching the coveted position of Ampang division chief.

Altimet received 1,926 votes, defeating Selangor Deputy Speaker Mohd Kamri Kamaruddin (1,637 votes) and Azrul Azwar Ahmad Tajudin (236 votes), in a contest that saw a high turnout among party members. Out of 4,636 eligible voters, a total of 3,815 ballots were cast.

His victory strengthens his position within the party and reflects growing grassroots support for the first-term assemblyman, who won the Lembah Jaya state seat in the 2023 Selangor election.

Known for his work on community development, education, youth empowerment and the arts, Altimet’s rise in PKR is seen as part of a broader generational shift within the party.

Meanwhile, PKR information chief Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has announced that he will be contesting for a seat in the party’s Central Leadership Council (MPP), stepping back from his earlier plan to run for a vice-presidential post.

The Communications Minister said the change in course followed extensive consultations with leaders and grassroots members during visits to several states.

“I have visited several states, held discussions with many leaders and assessed the need to contest. After giving it serious thought, I’ve made my decision and would like to officially announce today (last night) that I will be contesting a position in the MPP to strengthen the party and inject fresh energy into the council,” he said at the Lembah Pantai parliamentary Hari Raya open house yesterday evening.

“Insya-Allah, I will healthily campaign alongside my colleagues and present a new leadership dynamic, as this is the team that will steer the party, together with our unity government partners, into the 16th General Election.”

Fahmi, who is also the Lembah Pantai MP, said the MPP is the best platform for him to contribute to the party’s future, adding that he would work with his team to run a clean and effective campaign.

In Melaka, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin made a strong comeback by winning the Hang Tuah Jaya division chief post with 1,995 votes, defeating incumbent Mohd Rafee Ibrahim (736 votes). His running mate, Zamzizul Nordin, defeated Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli with 1,905 votes to 791.

PKR’s divisional elections continue until April 20, with national-level contests — including for the MPP, Wanita and Youth wings — scheduled for May 24. Results for Selangor, Melaka, Perlis, and a Kedah Youth wing re-vote are expected later today. – April 13, 2025.
