Perak PAS’ Razman suspended from state assembly for six months over slanderous remarks

State opposition leader was referred to the rights and privileges committee in December for remarks about waving Chinese national flags in Teluk Intan last October

12:32 PM MYT

IPOH — Perak opposition leader Razman Zakaria (Gunung Semanggol-PN) has been suspended for six months with immediate effect for making racially-charged and slanderous statements.

The motion to suspend Razman was tabled by Ong Boon Piow (Bercham-PH) and seconded by Datuk Shahrul Zaman Yahya (Rungkup-BN) during the state assembly sitting today.

The motion was passed with a majority voice vote, with state assembly Speaker Datuk Mohammad Zahir Abdul Khalid issuing the suspension to Razman.

In response to the ruling, Razman provided words of encouragement to his peers “to continue the fight as lawmakers who make the law.

“Therefore, we cannot afford to defend any act of infringement against the nation’s law,” said the assemblyman as he left the assembly.

On December 4 last year, the Perak PAS commissioner was referred to the state assembly’s rights and privilege committee over alleged slander and racially-charged remarks.

His referral was made after the PAS leader reportedly said in the state assembly that Malaysian citizens had raised Chinese national flags during an event held in Teluk Intan on October 24.

Assemblyman Jason Ng Thien Yeong (Astaka-PH) tabled the motion then to refer Razman to the committee, which was seconded by Wong May Ing (PH- Pantai Remis).

In the past, Razman has made several claims deemed defamatory against key government leaders, and has had to apologise for them.

He previously targeted Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, and Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh.

In February, he claimed that Yeoh was linked to the Yeoh family of the YTL Corporation Bhd conglomerate.

Meanwhile, in December, Razman apologised to Nga for accusing the DAP politician of being involved in a parade where some participants had waved the Chinese national flag. – April 16, 2025
