Fishing boat sinks off Langkawi’s Pantai Kok: all crew, mostly Thai, rescued

MMEA confirms they received alert at 1.05pm yesterday, all onboard unharmed with help from nearby fishermen

11:40 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – A group of 24 crew members, including 22 Thai nationals and two locals, were rescued after their bilis fishing boat began sinking off the coast of Pantai Kok, Langkawi, yesterday afternoon.

The incident, which took place on the north-western coast of Langkawi island, occurred around 12pm when the boat started to leak and began taking on water.

Fortunately, nearby fishermen from three other vessels were quick to respond and successfully rescued all onboard before the boat fully submerged.

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) confirmed receiving the alert at 1.05pm via the Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre Langkawi.

“MRSC Langkawi received a report of a local fishing vessel with 24 crew members – comprising two Malaysians and 22 Thai nationals – sinking in the waters off Pantai Kok,” the agency said in a statement.

The boat’s owner later verified that the incident took place around midday, NST reported.

It was also reported that all crew members were rescued unharmed.

A video clip of the boat sinking, lasting two minutes and 45 seconds, has since gone viral on social media, drawing attention to the dramatic rescue.
