Policy to focus on attire, facilities and athlete welfare in line with syariah principles, says lead researcher

KOTA BHARU — Kelantan is set to roll out an Islamic-friendly sports policy when it hosts the 2028 Malaysia Games (Sukma), with organisers aiming to harmonise competitive sport with syariah principles.

The policy, currently in development, will place emphasis on attire, facilities, prayer times, food provisions and sponsorship — all guided by Islamic values.

Professor Dr Halim Mokhtar, head of the Kelantan Islamic-Friendly Sports Policy Research Team, said the initiative reflects a collaborative effort involving the state government, religious authorities, education leaders and policy researchers.

“There will be a particular focus on syariah-compliant attire in sports like swimming, rhythmic gymnastics and cycling. 

“We’re also looking at facility designs that allow for appropriate segregation between male and female athletes,” he told reporters at the second round of the Kelantan Islamic-Friendly Sports Policy and Implementation Roundtable held here today, Bernama reported.

The policy is expected to undergo pilot testing ahead of Sukma 2028.

According to Prof Halim, the team has been holding engagement sessions since early this year to gather views from athletes, coaches and sports management personnel.

“To ensure the success of this policy, we’ve conducted a series of studies and roundtable discussions with experts and stakeholders across various levels,” he said.

Thursday’s roundtable brought together more than 80 participants, including NGOs and scholars from local universities. — April 17, 2025
