PKR elections: defeated by Afdlin, Nik Nazmi hints at filing appeal

The Setiawangsa MP, who lost by a margin of 68 votes, believes there are several issues worth raising, but did not elaborate

KUALA LUMPUR – Setiawangsa MP, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, says he will use the appropriate party channels and processes to voice issues arising from the PKR branch elections.

He was defeated by comedian Datuk Afdlin Shauki in the race for Setiawangsa PKR Branch Chief yesterday, losing by just 68 votes. Nik Nazmi believes there are several matters worth raising, but did not go into detail.

“Regarding the results of the Setiawangsa PKR branch elections that have been announced, I believe a transparent and fair election process is the foundation of PKR’s strength as a reformist party.

“Nonetheless, we believe there are certain issues that should be raised, and we will use the proper party channels and processes to address them.

“This is part of our commitment to ensure party elections are carried out with integrity and fairness,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Nik Nazmi, who is also PKR vice president, said he would allow the appeal process to proceed in accordance with the rules and procedures set by the party.

“I remain committed to serving the people and upholding the struggle of PKR at all levels,” he added.

The natural resources and environmental sustainability minister expressed his deepest gratitude and appreciation to all supporters, campaigners, and party members who had worked alongside him and supported him throughout the election process.

“Your support means a great deal to me and will continue to be my strength in pursuing the reformist struggle,” he said.

Earlier, the contest for the Setiawangsa PKR branch chief post saw Afdlin, who is also a director and actor, securing 631 votes, compared to Nik Nazmi’s 563.

Afdlin joined PKR in 2021 and ran for the same position in 2022 but lost to Nik Nazmi, who has served two terms as Setiawangsa MP.

Previously, two other central PKR leaders who lost at the branch level announced they would submit formal appeals to the Party Election Committee regarding last Saturday’s election results.

The decision was made by PKR communications director Lee Chean Chung and PKR Deputy Information Chief Chua Wei Kiat.

Chean Chung, who is also the Petaling Jaya MP, said the decision was made after receiving various calls and messages questioning the transparency of the results and the election process. – April 19, 2025.
