Storm chaos in KL: flash floods and fallen trees bring city traffic to a standstill

Multiple roads blocked as heavy rain batters capital, emergency crews scramble to clear debris and restore flow

6:40 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – A thunderstorm that swept across the city this afternoon triggered flash floods and brought down trees in multiple locations, severely affecting traffic flow.

One of the worst-hit areas was Jalan Kuching, where a fallen tree near the junction with Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim blocked most of the lanes heading into the city centre. According to Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) Control and Command Centre (KLCCC), only the far-right lane remains accessible as crews work to clear the debris.

Flash floods were also reported along both directions of Jalan Kuching, particularly near the Segambut roundabout, where rising water levels left only one lane passable.

Elsewhere, a tree fell across Jalan 42/70 in Desa Sri Hartamas, cutting off the stretch between Jalan Puncak Kiara Utama and the Kerinchi Link exit. This was confirmed by Astro Radio Traffic via X (formerly Twitter).

Traffic police and emergency response teams are on the ground to manage the situation, with efforts ongoing to restore access on affected roads.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department had earlier issued a warning for thunderstorms with heavy rain and strong winds across most of the country, forecasting inclement weather until 7pm.

The advisory covered the Klang Valley, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, and Pahang, as well as large parts of Kedah, Perak, Terengganu, Sarawak, and Sabah.

According to the Public Info Banjir portal, water levels in the Klang Valley remained within normal range as of this evening. – April 21, 2025
