MOE red faced in own flag blunder

Ministry orders return of all printed copies and working on corrected version, apologises for oversight

2:25 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The Education Ministry (MoE) has joined the list of parties under fire for misrepresenting the national flag. It issued a formal apology today for the incorrect display of the Jalur Gemilang in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination results analysis report.

In a statement, the ministry admitted the oversight and confirmed that immediate and firm action has been taken against those responsible. A full investigation is underway.

“This negligence is unacceptable, as the Jalur Gemilang is a symbol of national pride and sovereignty,” the statement read.

The MoE has ordered the return of all printed copies of the report and is working on issuing corrected versions.

This latest blunder adds to a string of recent incidents involving erroneous depictions of the Malaysian flag, raising alarm over the handling of national symbols.

On April 15, Sin Chew Daily came under fire for featuring an incomplete Jalur Gemilang – missing the crescent moon – on its front page during coverage of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit.

The mistake drew criticism from the public and even Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim, the paper attributed the error to a technical glitch and has since suspended two top editors. Yesterday, it published a corrected version of the flag on its front page to honour the national symbol.

A similar controversy unfolded at a Baby Expo in Mid Valley, where Singapore-based brand Singapore Lactation Bakes displayed a Malaysian flag missing the crescent moon at its booth. The Home Ministry launched a probe, and organisers swiftly cleared the booth, stressing their commitment to regaining public trust. – April 24, 2025
