Penang LRT line construction to go full swing Q4 2026: MRT Corp

GEORGE TOWN – The full-scale construction of the Mutiara Line light-rail transit (LRT) project will commence in the fourth quarter of next year, said MRT Corp’s chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim. 

Zarif said that despite the seemingly late progress, the LRT projects are done based on the S-curve concept, and the construction of the initial parts of these curves tends to be time-consuming. 

“The large scale of construction, where you can see the viaduct, will be taking shape by quarter four next year,” he told the reporters at the sidelines of the MRT Corp’s Raya Aidilfitri open house held at The Top, Komtar, here.  

Zarif’s comments came after MRT Corp’s April 20 statement, where the company said that the project is on track with the company having secured access to 86 plots of land to date, and the gazette under Section 8 of the Land Acquisition Act 1960, ahead of the initial target schedule of October this year. 

The company has also obtained approval for advance works under Section 20A of the Town and Country Planning Act 1976, which were obtained on April 15. 

The LRT project – which will connect the under-reclamation Silicon Island in the southern coast of Penang island to Komtar, and then to Penang Sentral terminal in Butterworth through a cross-strait link – is slated for completion in 2031. 

Soil investigation needed

Following this progress, Zarif said that the contractor SRS Consortium would now have to do the soil investigation process. He said that the process was done in 2018, but requires an update should certain areas require another round of investigation. 

The final design of the project can only be done following the conclusion of the soil investigation. 

Zarif also said that there would be relocation of utility lines that have to be done as LRT construction works are done on road reserves, and there are a lot of utility lines installed along the roads. 

“I know that there are (a lot of) expectations from people of Penang and the state (since) this has been a long-drawn project. But we are doing our best in order to expedite this. 

“So far, we can see the progress that has been quite substantial, even though it has been only three months.  For us to move the entire machinery of the government and everyone else to achieve what we achieved today is quite significant. 

“So, I hope with this kind of momentum, we will (be able to) continue (it) and hopefully, we are able to do better than our own targeted timeline,” he added. – April 25, 2025
