KUALA LUMPUR – Naza Enviro Holdings Sdn Bhd has signed a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU) with China’s Grandblue Environment Co Ltd on Wednesday to modernise Malaysia’s solid waste management sector, with a focus on sustainability and renewable energy.
The partnership aims to develop large-scale waste recovery, recycling, and energy projects, including waste-to-energy (WtE) and future hydrogen fuel production initiatives.
A joint venture is also in the pipeline to implement these projects, which are designed to support Malaysia’s transition towards a circular economy and carbon neutrality.
Naza Enviro, a pioneer in renewable energy generation from waste since 2005, operates the Bukit Tagar Enviro Park – Malaysia’s largest solid waste-to-energy facility. The park has generated more than 440 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity and achieved 2.7 million tonnes in carbon credits via its 12MW renewable energy plant.
“This partnership reflects Naza Enviro’s commitment to building a cleaner, greener Malaysia through innovation, technology and strategic international collaboration,” said Naza Group executive chairman SM Nasarudin SM Nasimuddin.
“We are turning challenges into opportunities for national progress.”
China-listed Grandblue brings deep technical know-how and experience in waste management, operating across 20 Chinese provinces and in Bangkok, Thailand.
Following its acquisition of Canvest Environmental Protection Group, Grandblue’s waste-to-energy operations now exceed 99,000 tonnes per day. In 2024 alone, the company produced over 4.8 billion kWh of electricity and cut 3.8 million tonnes of carbon emissions.
The collaboration is expected to bring substantial benefits to Malaysia – from clean energy generation to job creation and technology transfer to local companies. Projects under the venture will feature AI-driven monitoring systems and carbon emission data digitalisation, aligning with national environmental goals.
The MoU was signed at Naza Group’s Aidilfitri celebration by Naza Enviro group managing director Tan Sri Ismee Ismail and Grandblue president Jin Duo. The event was witnessed by key executives from both organisations and other industry stakeholders.
The partnership now moves into its planning and feasibility phase, with both parties working alongside government agencies to identify project sites and fast-track implementation. – April 26, 2025
