IPOH – The Perak state government has admitted that it is unable to resolve the ongoing financial crisis affecting Perak FC, with Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad stating that the cost of running the football club is simply too high for the state to bear.

“The cost of football in Malaysia is too expensive, and unfortunately, it is beyond the state government’s capacity,” Saarani explained. 

“I hope football fans can understand that it’s not just Perak; many other states are facing similar financial difficulties.”

He further emphasised that the state government is also unable to address the issue of salary arrears for Perak FC players, with the burden falling on the club’s sponsor.

“We are not in a position to resolve the salary arrears issue,” Saarani added, speaking after attending the Aidilfitri Raya celebration for Perak government-linked companies (GLCs) at the Indera Mulia Stadium. 

Despite the financial setbacks, Saarani reassured that football development in the state would continue, with the Perak Football Association (PAFA) still committed to nurturing young talent. 

“The cost of developing football is much more affordable, and the state government has already contributed approximately RM1 million to support this initiative,” he said.

Yesterday, Perak FC chairman Datuk Seri Azim Zabidi confirmed that the team may be forced to withdraw from next season’s Super League due to the ongoing financial struggles. 

He revealed that the club had invested nearly RM40 million over the past three years in an effort to develop the team, but the financial challenges have proven insurmountable. — April 27, 2025
