KUALA LUMPUR – Referees are bound to make mistakes, and it would be unfair to pass judgement without proper investigation or to condemn an official based on past records, says Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) deputy president Datuk S. Sivasundaram.
The FAM’s response follows mounting criticism directed at referee Razlan Joffri Ali, who officiated Saturday’s Malaysia Cup final between Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) and Sri Pahang FC.
Speaking to Scoop, Sivasundaram, who also chairs the FAM Referees’ Committee, said an internal review found no major errors in Razlan’s handling of the match.
“The Referee Evaluator’s report shows that Razlan’s handling of the match demonstrated good performance, which did not affect the final outcome,” said Sivasundaram.
“The FAM Referees Unit and the FAM Referees’ Performance Committee have also conducted a match analysis and found that the second yellow card decisions (orders to leave the field) given to both teams were accurate according to the FIFA Laws of the Game 2024–2025.
“The penalty decision awarded to the JDT team and the decision to cancel a JDT goal for an offside infringement were both accurate.
“Each incident in the match was reviewed accurately by the VAR (video assistant referee), and the level of compliance with VAR protocol was excellent.”
Sivasundaram stressed that all ‘key match incidents’ during the final were officiated correctly in line with FIFA regulations.
“It’s normal for referees to make errors, and we cannot jump the gun without conducting proper investigations or judge a referee based on his previous track record.
“Although some minor mistakes were made while officiating the match, we are satisfied that they did not significantly affect the final outcome.
“Both teams had equal opportunities to be crowned champions, and the result was determined by the teams themselves.
“FAM are very committed to the quality of referee performance and have never compromised on referee standards,” he added.
Sri Pahang were reduced to ten men in the 35th minute when Sergio Aguero was shown a straight red card for kicking JDT striker Bergson Da Silva, leaving Fandi Ahmad’s side facing an uphill battle.
Pressure mounted further as the Southern Tigers pressed aggressively, committing eight fouls across the 90 minutes.
Controversy erupted again in the 74th minute when Arif Aiman Hanapi netted JDT’s winning goal, with Pahang head coach Fandi suggesting the strike should have been ruled out for offside. Sri Pahang eventually succumbed to a 2-1 defeat.
Adding to the furore, Fandi questioned how Razlan Joffri — who has previously served a suspension — was deemed fit to oversee the showpiece final. — April 28, 2025
