Colourful turnout at annual Bon Odori in Shah Alam

Thousands of Malaysians join in the various dances while sampling popular Japanese snacks

5:26 PM MYT

SHAH ALAM – Despite some controversy last year, the Bon Odori never fails to attract thousands to the festival grounds at the national stadium here.

The festival’s 47th edition was back with its usual attractions, especially cute freebies, a drum performance, dances and stalls selling snacks and souvenirs.

Participants also took the opportunity to don colourful yukatas while posing for selfies amid the blaring music.

Organised by The Japan Club of Kuala Lumpur, The Japanese School of Kuala Lumpur, and the Embassy of Japan, the festival was started as a way to promote diplomatic ties with Japan. – July 23, 2023
