Muda split votes, giving PN win in Sg Kandis: Fahmi Fadzil

PN won with a 167-vote majority while Muda’s candidate obtained 1,341 votes

KUALA LUMPUR — Pakatan Harapan (PH) communications director Fahmi Fadzil has pinned the blame on Muda for splitting the votes in Sg Kandis, ostensibly costing the PH-Barisan Nasional alliance a supermajority in Selangor.

A three-cornered fight for the Sg Kandis state seat saw Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) Wan Dzahanurin Ahmad beating PH’s Zawali Mughni by a mere 167 votes.

Wan Dzahanurin secured 28,926 votes against Zawali’s 28,759 while Muda’s Afriena Shaqira obtained 1,341 votes.

“I am saddened that this split has allowed PN to win a seat,” he said briefly when questioned by reporters on criticism over Muda splitting votes in several seats.

He was at the unity government’s watch party at the World Trade Centre here.

All of Muda’s 19 candidates for the election lost their deposits.

Fahmi, who is also communications and digital minister, added that he would prefer to first look at voting details of the state constituency, which has been a PKR stronghold since 2008, before making additional comments on the matter.

Reiterating the message of unity issued earlier on by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during a press conference here, Fahmi said that the unity government respects the people’s decision.

“At the same time, we will look at ways to improve the federal government’s efforts, especially in terms of uniting the people and addressing their issues,” he said, noting that the low turnout rate for the elections will be analysed.

“If we look at findings from some research firms, this outcome (status quo for PN and PH governed states) is more or less within our expectations, but at the same time… maybe we will have to understand what happened (regarding low voter turnout).

“We will have a post-mortem to better understand the issue.” — August 13, 2023
