KLANG – Full assistance will be given by the federal and state governments, as well as relevant agencies, to facilitate burial preparations for the victims of yesterday’s plane crash near Bandar Elmina.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this while spending time with and visiting the victims’ next-of-kin in the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital’s Forensic Department.

“I ask the families to be patient, no one could have expected (this incident). Now, (the hospital) is managing forensic processes (for victim identification),” he told media personnel waiting outside the hospital here today.

“DNA (gathering) has been completed, and everything will be managed by the government, as well as the Selangor government and the state’s Islamic Religious Department.

“Now, we are providing all the help needed for burial preparations, equipment, and also accommodation (for families and next-of-kin).”

“The government provides aid to the families, especially to those who do not have jobs, as well as to the children of the victims.”

Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa, Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, and caretaker Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

Anwar added that he is satisfied with the effort and cooperation given by the security, hospital, and charities that have efficiently provided assistance to the victims’ families.

“I have followed the progress from yesterday. Alhamdulillah, all operations involving security, forensics, hospitals, charities, and accommodation have been efficient. I am proud and thank you.”

Asked about the possibility of a by-election following the passing of Pelangai assemblyman Datuk Seri Johari Harun, Anwar said it would be discussed at a later time.

It has been a sombre day at the Forensics Department, where more than 50 family members and next-of-kin have been waiting since 9am for the victim identification and claim processes.

The crash, which occurred at about 2.50pm yesterday, resulted in 10 casualties, of which six were passengers and two crew members onboard the Beechcraft 390 (Premiere 1) flight.

The remaining two victims were a motorcyclist and a motorist passing by when the plane crashed.

The plane was en route from Langkawi to Subang, and had been cleared to land at 2.48pm yesterday. – August 18, 2023
