KUALA LUMPUR – The management of Buy & Save has apologised for the recent incident near Bukit Bintang involving a group of belly dancers in attention-grabbing costumes.

In a statement, the management said the performance by the dancers was held as part of the store’s business anniversary celebrations on August 5 in front of their Bukit Bintang outlet, which went viral on social media.

“The company is aware that videos of the performance have been causing a stir on social media.

“We sincerely apologise for what has transpired and take full responsibility. We will cooperate with the authorities in their investigations,” read the statement.

The company said they immediately halted the performance five minutes into the show when it became apparent that it did not align with Malaysia’s cultural norms.

Following the incident, they decided to suspend their marketing manager pending further inquiry.

“The company’s marketing manager, responsible for coordinating the event, was reportedly unaware of the costumes that would be worn by the hired dancers.

“The company has not and will not carry out any activities, especially marketing activities, that violate the Islamic laws of the country. We will always be sensitive to Malaysian culture,” they added.

The store management was under scrutiny by netizens once again after the viral video showing three belly dancers performing outside the store was shared online.
