Three-way fight for Pulai, Simpang Jeram by-elections

There are 166,653 eligible voters for the Pulai parliamentary by-election and 40,379 eligible voters for the Simpang Jeram state seat

JOHOR BAHRU — The Pulai and Simpang Jeram by-elections is set to witness a three-corner fight for both seats respectively.

The Pulai parliamentary seat will see Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) Suhaizan Kaiat go up against Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) Zulkifli Jaafar and Kuala Lumpur Consumer Safety Association president Samsudin Mohamad Fauzi, who will be contesting as an independent candidate.

While the Simpang Jeram state seat, will see PH’s Nazri Abdul Rahman take on PN’s Dr Mohd Mazri Yahya and independent candidate S. Jeghanaathan.

To ensure the nomination process went well, a total of 3,500 police personnel were on duty at the two nomination centres, where they also installed barriers and barbed wire to separate supporters of the political parties intending to contest in the by-elections to prevent any confrontation and provocation between the groups.

Supporters of the relevant political parties had gathered at the location set by the EC, which is about 50 metres away from the nomination centre, as early as 7am to show support for their candidates.

It was a vibrant and colourful atmosphere at the centre, with supporters of political parties breaking into cheers and displaying banners and flags in support of the candidates.

The nomination centre for the Pulai parliamentary by-election is at Dewan Jubli Intan Sultan Ibrahim in Johor Bahru, while the centre for the Simpang Jeram state by-election is at Dewan Jubli Intan Sultan Ibrahim, Muar.

The nomination process was held for one hour between 9am and 10 am.

The Election Commission (EC) has set September 9 as polling day for both by-elections with early voting on September 5.

The campaigning period is for 14 days starting after the declaration of the contesting candidates by the EC until 11.59pm on September 8.

There are 166,653 eligible voters for the Pulai parliamentary by-election and 40,379 eligible voters for the Simpang Jeram state seat. The electoral roll used for the by-elections is the latest supplementary electoral roll updated as of July 23.

The by-elections were called after the Pulai parliamentary seat and Simpang Jeram state seat became vacant following the death of Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub who was the incumbent for both seats.
