Auditor-General’s Report to be presented to cabinet periodically

National Audit Dept says this move will contribute to elevate nation’s CPI position

7:15 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The Special Cabinet Committee on Anti-Corruption has decided that the Auditor-General’s Report will be periodically presented to the cabinet, the National Audit Department said today.

In a statement today, the department said that the decision came after the special cabinet committee had a meeting on July 6.

“Such affirmative action would contribute to elevating Malaysia’s position in the corruption perceptions index (CPI) and improving the world’s perception of Malaysia.

It added that to date, a total of 10,803 out of the 11,224 issues raised in the Auditor-General’s Reports have been successfully resolved at the federal and state levels.

“The National Audit Department will always be alert, attentive, and perceptive in carrying out its auditing powers to examine and investigate the management of public funds.

“Focus is given towards public interest and ensuring the accountability of ministries and government departments in spending taxpayers’ money.

“We will continue to establish cooperation with all parties, including public agencies and other related bodies, for the well-being of the people and the continued prosperity of the nation.”

Besides that, the department noted that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had visited its headquarters in Putrajaya for a brief meeting with its management and personnel today.

It said that – in his speech to almost 1,500 department personnel who attended the meeting physically and virtually – Anwar emphasised the role played by the department in maintaining good governance and accountability for the nation.

“(Anwar) added that a transparent and comprehensive Auditor-General’s Report would reflect strong confidence of the people in the services provided by the government while also enabling the government to identify governance issues that needed to be addressed immediately.”

In March, Anwar had instructed his ministers to comb through the Auditor-General’s Report 2021 Series 2, following his directive earlier in the year for the cabinet to examine the report’s remarks on expenses and leakages. – September 1, 2023
