J-Kom chief takes Facebook break, claims to be target of hackers

Datuk Mohammad Agus Yusoff says hiatus will allow clean-up

KUALA LUMPUR – Community Communications Department (J-Kom) director-general Datuk Mohammad Agus Yusoff has claimed that his Facebook account is being targeted by hackers.

In a post on the social media platform today, Agus said since his account is facing some “problems”, he will be taking a temporary break from the site to allow his technical team to do a clean-up.

“My Facebook (account) has some problems. There are many ‘hantu’ [Internet trolls]. The ‘hantu’ are not netizens who have a lot to comment, but those who are trying to hack my account.

“As such, on the advice of my technical team, I will be taking a break from Facebook. My technicians want to clean up some names that don’t have profiles.”

Noting that he will still be active on TikTok and Instagram, Agus also conveyed a message to visitors on his Facebook page, saying: “To those who like to leave comments and criticism, we can still be friends, as long as your profile is complete.”

Previously, it was rumoured that dissatisfaction among politicians in the unity government and public criticism over J-Kom’s efficacy could potentially result in the appointment of a new director-general

Among Agus’ critics was Skudai representative Marina Ibrahim, who proposed that he be replaced following the department’s failure in disseminating information on government policies, especially public-centric initiatives.

This came after J-Kom was criticised in July for releasing an infographic stating that the household expenditure for a family is less than RM400 a month while the monthly spending of a single individual is about RM200.

The infographic, which the department deleted from its social media platforms within two days of being uploaded, garnered fierce public backlash – with many describing it as unrealistic as it did not take into account necessities such as sugar, milk and vegetables. – September 6, 2023
