Labuan Marine Department addresses ferry terminal congestion

Dept director emphasises commitment to enhancing sea transportation, reducing delays during peak seasons

1:24 PM MYT

LABUAN – The Labuan Marine Department is taking proactive steps to enhance ferry services on this duty-free island through ongoing engagement sessions with ferry operators.

Labuan Marine Department director Alimuddin Amirudin said this proactive approach aims to address the persistent congestion issues at the ferry terminal, reducing delays in both vehicle and passenger embarkation and disembarkation, especially during holiday seasons, which have raised public concerns.

“This initiative exemplifies the department’s commitment to improving sea transportation services for all travellers and alleviating congestion problems at the ferry terminal,” he said today.

At the same time, Alimuddin also acknowledged the challenges faced by ferry commuters and the criticisms that have arisen as a result.

“Our department is fully aware of the situation and is dedicated to enhancing the overall ferry experience for travellers,” he said.

Alimuddin revealed that an examination of the ferry schedules has shown ample time for ferries to berth for the disembarkation process, even with the implementation of immigration checks on travellers.

“To enhance efficiency and convenience, the department is actively reviewing the existing ferry schedules to align them with the current needs of travellers.

“This revision is expected to result in a more streamlined and efficient ferry operation,” he said.

Currently, two ferry operators manage six ferries daily, serving the routes between Labuan-Menumbok-Labuan and Muara, Brunei-Labuan-Muara, Brunei.

Alimuddin said these routes are vital for both local commuters and tourists, making the improvement of ferry services a top priority for the department.

Labuan Mainland Link operates three ferries, namely MV Kimanis 1, MV Putrajaya 1, and MV Goodwill Star, providing five to eight trips daily (during festive seasons) for the routes Labuan-Menumbok-Labuan.

It also operates the MV Joystar ferry for the route Muara, Brunei-Labuan-Muara, Brunei, on a daily basis.

Another ro-ro ferry operator, Juta Bonus Development Sdn Bhd, operates the MV Galaxy and MV Blue Ocean for two to four trips daily. – September 7, 2023
