KLANG – Adopting tolerance and taking a moderate approach to politics is essential in ensuring that Malaysia becomes a role model for the world in various aspects, said DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke.

Loke said that in a plural society and multi-religious country like Malaysia, politics should not be driven by extreme voices, as this can lead to the country’s destruction.

“All parties must recognise that as a diverse nation, we must embrace tolerance and a moderate approach and mainstream them, because Malaysia’s success is dependent on our ability to live harmoniously despite our diversity.”

“It needs to be understood and fostered so that the country can rise again together under the unity government to overcome various challenges,” he said today at the opening of the 2023 Wanita DAP National Congress.

The transport minister also thanked all parties for putting aside their differences in order to form the unity government.

“I know it’s not easy for everyone (to do so).  It’s not easy for our friends from Umno-Barisan Nasional (BN), and it’s not easy for our friends from PKR either. But I want to bring togetherness; that is the spirit of humanity. If we all have this spirit of humanity, we will be united.

“Regardless of race and religion, we seek a stable and peaceful nation with economic growth and opportunities for everyone to succeed, have access to quality education and healthcare, and ultimately live a good life,” he said.

Loke also stated that the DAP has repeatedly stated its commitment to upholding and defending the federal constitution, specifically Islam as the federation’s religion, the position of Malay rulers, Bahasa Malaysia as the national language, and the Malays’ special rights.

He stated that these principles are among the directions and framework of the party’s struggle to develop a progressive society that celebrates diversity.

Meanwhile, Loke said that the presence of Wanita BN at the congress for the first time is a positive start, adding that he hopes the grassroots can foster a spirit of cooperation as well.

A total of 305 Wanita DAP delegates from across the country attended the congress. – September 9, 2023
