‘I choose jail’: Hadi says willing to be punished over alleged offences

'I am ready to be punished' the PAS leader tells the Dewan Rakyat

12:49 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang (Marang-PN) is willing to go to prison if he is found guilty of committing any offence.

Hadi, who said this when speaking in the Dewan Rakyat today, added that police have always conducted their duties well whenever they questioned him as part of their investigations into the various police reports lodged against him.

“I am ready to be punished. I’m not sure if the punishment is a jail term or a fine, but I would rather go to jail.

“If it’s a fine, I’d prefer to give the money to Pasti (PAS’ early education network Pusat Asuhan Tunas Islam),” he said to rounds of laughter and applause from opposition backbenchers.

For the record, Hadi has faced several police probes, none of which have yet to advance to the courts for them to determine further action on his alleged offences.

On September 7, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said that police have submitted their investigation papers to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) on Hadi’s statement allegedly disputing the power of the Pardons Board.

In a campaign speech in Johor last month, Hadi had claimed that under Islamic principles, the party that has a right to grant a pardon is a victim’s family members, not the Pardons Board.

In July, Razarudin said that another investigation paper into Hadi had been submitted to the AGC, relating to one of Hadi’s Facebook statements where he claimed that DAP wanted to maintain the understanding of Islam in the Federal Constitution based on the interpretation of liberalism.

Previously, in July, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail (Senator-PH) said in a parliamentary written reply that police have submitted to the AGC its investigation papers regarding Hadi’s statement about overthrowing the government through democratic means. – September 13, 2023
