We won’t entertain provocation: organisers promise peaceful Save Malaysia rally

Group asks participants to maintain discipline, order

2:29 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The organisers behind the Save Malaysia rally scheduled for tomorrow have assured that the gathering will be conducted peacefully and “with full constitutional spirit.”

In a statement today, the Save Malaysia Movement secretariat urged participants to conduct themselves in an orderly manner during the rally.

“We will not entertain any provocation, and ask all participants to maintain discipline and orderliness throughout the rally.”

Besides calling for charges to once more be brought against Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who received a conditional discharge from his corruption trial last week, the movement is also calling for the attorney-general and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to be “freed from executive powers.”

Its third demand is for “fair laws to all citizens.”

“The joint committee calls on those who love integrity and agree with our three demands to show up in Kuala Lumpur to express their support.”

It added that it has formed a joint committee, including Perikatan Nasional (PN) component parties and Pejuang, to attract the participation of non-governmental organisations and individuals as well as political parties to form a more inclusive group.

PN members PAS, Bersatu and Gerakan are part of the committee, which also features Pejuang, currently under the helm of president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, the son of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Gerakan Pembela Ummah, Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa, Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam Se-Malaysia, Mahasiswa United, Persatuan Progresif Perikemanusiaan Selangor and Gabungan Ayahanda Persilatan are also included in the committee.

Previously, it was reported that the rally, believed to be mainly organised by PN Youth, will take place at Masjid Kg Baru here, with the movement calling on citizens to assemble in large numbers for the afternoon Zohor prayers.

During a press conference at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters last night, Bukit Aman’s criminal investigation department director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said that police had rejected an application to hold the rally as organisers had left out pertinent details in their submission.

Police had also yesterday detained Bersatu’s Badrul Hisham Shaharin, better known as Chegubard, for refusing to cooperate with police over investigations into a separate matter.

Shuhaily had stressed that the arrest was unrelated to the upcoming rally.

Badrul was released from police custody earlier this morning after his statement was recorded. – September 15, 2023
