PAS polls set to see top posts uncontested

KUALA LUMPUR – PAS elections are set to be a dull affair for its upcoming general assembly, next month, as top party positions such as president, deputy president and three vice-presidents will not be contested.

The no-contest, PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said, was due to zero nominations for the said posts, adding that elections will only be held for the party’s central committee.

“Presently, only the current president and deputy president have been nominated, which ensures that their positions (in the party) will be retained,” he told reporters during a press conference at the party’s headquarters, here, today.

The Kota Bharu MP also mentioned while four nominations were received for the three vice-president posts, Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor who was among those nominated chose to withdraw, ensuring that the remaining nominees who were the incumbents retain their respective posts.

During the PAS elections two years ago, both president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang and deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man were not challenged for their posts.

Hadi assumed the party’s presidency in 2002, while Tuan Ibrahim became his deputy in 2015.

The three vice-presidents in the party at present include Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, Bagan Serai MP Datuk Idris Ahmad and Panchor assemblyman Datuk Amar Nik Abdullah.

In making the decision to withdraw his nomination, Sanusi had reportedly said on Wednesday that he was unready to contest for the vice-presidency and would rather settle for a post as a PAS central committee member. 

Eighteen posts in the party’s central committee are up for grabs during the PAS’ Muktamar (general assembly) which is set to take place at IDCC Shah Alam for three days, beginning October 20.  — September 29, 2023
