Sri Lankan murder suspect dies in police custody

Post-mortem examination to take place at Kuala Lumpur Hospital to determine exact cause of death

2:27 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – A Sri Lankan man, who was suspected of murder, died yesterday after complaining of chest pains when he was detained at the Jinjang police lock-up.

In a statement today, Bukit Aman Integrity and Standard Compliance Department director Datuk Azri Ahmad said a Kuala Lumpur Hospital medical officer assistant had confirmed the death of the 43-year-old man on September 30.

“At around 11pm on September 30, the suspect complained of chest pains, and police immediately contacted the hospital. The medical officer assistant had provided initial treatment before confirming the death.

“Post-mortem will be conducted at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital to identify the cause of death.”

Azri added that his department, along with the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation and Deaths in Custody Unit, will be conducting investigations into the incident.

On September 23, the man was arrested under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder and detained at the lock-up in the Sentul district police headquarters. – October 1, 2023
