Sanusi to stand trial in Jan for sedition charges

Prosecution to present 10 witnesses

12:33 PM MYT

SELAYANG – The trial for the sedition case involving alleged remarks made by Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor against the Selangor ruler and the prime minister’s speech about the unity government is scheduled for January.

Sessions court judge Nor Rajiah Mat Zin fixed January 18 and 19, as well as 10 days in February, including 5, 8, 9, 12, 13, 15, 16, 19, 22, and 23 for trial, after the prosecution led by Datuk Masri Mohd Daud and Sanusi’s lead defence counsel Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud agreed on the dates.

Masri also informed the court that the prosecution would be bringing 10 witnesses to testify.

The 49-year-old PAS lawmaker was charged on July 18 before Nor Rajiah with one count of making seditious remarks regarding the appointment of Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari as Selangor mentri besar by the Sultan of Selangor.

On the same day, he was also charged with one count of the same offence for his speech regarding Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s statement on the king’s decree in relation to the formation of the unity government before sessions court judge Osman Affendi Mohd Salleh.

Both offences were previously framed under Section 4(1)(a) of the Sedition Act 1948.

However, today, both judges allowed Sanusi’s application to have both cases tried together before Nor Najiah next year.

Sanusi then pleaded not guilty to the amended charges involving two counts of making seditious remarks to the Sultan of Selangor and issuing the political statement at Taman Selayang Mutiara, Kg Bendahara, within the Gombak district on July 11.

Both the charges that were read to Sanusi today were framed under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948, which carries a maximum RM5,000 fine, a maximum of three years imprisonment, or both if found guilty. – October 4, 2023
