Immediate halt: Kedah slams door on massage parlour licences

State govt stands firm on shutting down any operator breaching licencing conditions

5:24 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The Alor Star City Council (MBAS) and the Kota Setar Land and District Office will no longer issue new licences to operate massage parlours in the state’s capital, effective immediately.

In a statement on its Facebook page today, MBAS mayor Datuk Zaid Ahmad stated that the directive comes following the decision by the Kedah state executive council during its meeting on June 21.

The decision drawn from the meeting aims to curb any immoral activities

“This directive is effective immediately,” the mayor added.

Previously, Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor reportedly said the state government would shut down any massage parlours found to have carried out activities that breached licencing conditions.

He also said the local authorities, together with the Immigration Department and the state government, would monitor reflexology centres, and if the centres were found to still be involved in prohibited activities, they would be immediately shut down with licences revoked.

Sanusi, who also advocates anti-gambling, has shuttered licenced gambling outlets in the state following his announcement on November 14, 2021, that the Kedah government will neither approve new gambling licences nor renew existing ones.

This, he said, is because gambling has caused too much damage, especially affecting family institutions. – October 5, 2024
