Exorbitant seafood bill triggers Johor ministry action against restaurant

Issue brought to light after customer posted video clip, receipt on Instagram, revealing RM1,260 bill for a meal

8:46 AM MYT

JOHOR BAHRU – The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry has issued a notice to a seafood stall operator at a food court here accused of charging her customer an exorbitant price for a family meal recently.

Its Johor director, Lilis Saslinda Pornomo, said the notice was issued at 5.30pm under Section 12 of the Consumer Protection Act for misleading pricing and Section 21 of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, which requires the stall operator to provide information for calculations to determine if elements of profiteering exist in the incident.

“The trader was given four days from yesterday to respond by providing justification and detailed information to verify the customer’s claim in order to avoid any arising issue,” she said last night.

Meanwhile, Lilis Saslinda denied that the stall was ordered to cease operation, adding that the ministry is conducting further investigations.

“Why is the trader still operating? We have no authority in that matter. I urge the public not to make inaccurate statements that could tarnish the reputation of the Johor Domestic Trade Ministry,” she said.

On Tuesday, a 26-second video and a photo of a receipt for the meal totalling RM1,260 were posted on the Instagram account of Nora’ Asikin Rahmat or Ekin, who claimed that the total cost of the meal was too expensive. Ekin is the wife of singer and radio announcer Asmawi Ani, also known as Mawi. – October 6, 2023
