Home minister says former Goldman Sachs banker now located at a ‘safe destination’

11:04 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Former Goldman Sachs banker Roger Ng has arrived in the country, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Hussain.

Confirming the matter to Utusan Malaysia, Razarudin declined to disclose Ng’s current whereabouts citing security concerns.

He confirmed that Ng arrived in the country at midnight to aid investigations into the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal which is currently in the process of asset recovery involving the funds.

On Friday, media reports said Ng, facing 10 years in jail after being convicted in New York for helping to loot billions of dollars from 1MDB, would be handed over to Malaysia to face related charges.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution said Ng had been allowed to attend trial in the United States, where he had been convicted but yet to start serving his jail term.

“We have not yet completed (the investigation). So in this case, we notified the US Justice Department (DoJ) through the Attorney-General’s Chambers that according to an agreement, we can get him back once the trial there is completed.

“So, the DoJ agreed to repatriate him to Malaysian authorities to continue investigations into 1MDB or Goldman Sachs,” he said.

Asked about the location of Ng’s arrival, Saifuddin merely said: “A safe destination.” – October 8, 2023
