Bersatu’s Ikmal adamant Dewan should summon PMO photog to clear vaping claims

This after speaker says no action to be taken against Tanah Merah MP over allegations

1:42 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Seri Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz (Tanah Merah-PN) has urged the lower House to summon the Prime Minister’s Office photographer who claimed that the Bersatu lawmaker was vaping during a Dewan Rakyat session last month.

Today, Ikmal said he had received a letter from Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul informing him that no action will be taken against him as checks could not confirm that the MP was vaping in Parliament.

“If I was vaping, by all means, suspend me from my parliamentary duties.

“But, (since I was proven to not be vaping), make sure that a reprimand is given to outside people, be they photographers or individuals allowed to enter the Dewan Rakyat, to not make viral (matters in Parliament),” he said.

He cited Section 9(l) of the Houses of Parliament (Privileges and Powers) Act 1952, which states that the publication of any false or scandalous libel on any MP touching on their conduct as a parliamentarian is subject to punishment for contempt.

“Did the speaker summon the photographer? As a professional photographer, he wouldn’t have only shot one photo (of the supposed wrong). Was the CCTV footage reviewed (to prove my innocence)?” Ikmal questioned.

“Photographers, or anyone for that matter, should not be allowed to simply accuse MPs (of wrongdoings) as this involves our dignity and image as lawmakers.”

In backing up Ikmal’s statements, opposition whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (Kota Bharu-PN) cited how the legislation also states that punishment can be imposed on those who “assault, obstruct or insult” any member coming to or going from the House.

“Are photographers now paparazzi in the Dewan? There are elements of the act being seditious,” he said, to which Ikmal reiterated that he is “only looking for justice” to be served to clear his name.

On September 19, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s (Tambun-PH) official photographer Sadiq Asyraf took to Twitter to post a photo of Ikmal, claiming that the lawmaker was caught vaping as he left Parliament.

Ikmal was captured in a shot depicting the opposition’s walkout from the Dewan Rakyat after Datuk Radzi Jidin (Putrajaya-PN) was booted out of the lower House for causing a ruckus.

Ikmal later denied being a smoker, clarifying that he was holding a pen to his mouth.

He said he was one of the lawmakers who had backed former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin’s generational endgame bill, which seeks to outlaw smoking for those born from 2007 onwards. – October 9, 2023
