PM’s Office disputes reports of Anwar backing new political party

Office says misuse of PM’s name negatively impact his ‘credibility and his administration’

KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has denounced claims that he has given his blessing for the formation of a new political party. 

In a statement today, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said Anwar does not “endorse nor certify” the establishment of yet another political party and admonished quarters that have intentionally abused the prime minister’s name. 

“PMO seriously regards acts by any quarters that intentionally misuse the prime minister’s name for specific reasons without approval. 

“Such acts are extremely irresponsible and leave a negative impact on the prime minister’s credibility and his administration.” 

PMO also advised the public not to be confused with unofficial statements issued by any parties. 

Earlier today, it was reported that an individual, said to be Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Anwar’s close associate, is planning to set up a new political party. 

The figure reportedly said a final decision on the matter will be announced after his meeting with Anwar, claiming that the prime minister had approved of a gathering to gather feedback from Indian community leaders on the necessity of forming a new political party. 

Previously, it was also alleged that an Indian party aligned with PH is in the works, with some asserting that the move had received Anwar’s approval. – October 9, 2023
