Klang Valley flash floods strike homes, prompt road closures

Road users told to expect delays as deluge of reports on high water levels shared online

KUALA LUMPUR – Some areas in the Klang Valley are experiencing floods after a brief downpour this evening.  

Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department shared pictures of homes in Kg Periuk, Kg Baru inundated by high water levels, with one photo depicting an elderly woman being carried out of her home by rescue personnel.  

Another photo showed a family with young children evacuating a house. According to the images, the flash flood reached knee level.  

The department said that it will be issuing a report on the incident soon.  

Meanwhile, Facebook user Khairul Rizan shared videos and pictures of heavy rainfall in Petaling Street at the heart of the city centre. It is unclear if the area was affected by floods.

According to Astro Radio Traffic (@astrotraffic), road users should expect delays due to flash floods on traffic-heavy roads such as Jalan Sultan Ismail, Sultan Iskandar Highway, the North-South Expressway (KL-Seremban), Jalan Damansara, Jalan Syed Putra, Jalan Ampang, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim and Jalan Pahang.  

Other places which saw road closures are Jalan Travers, Jalan Pudu, Jalan Pantai Baru, Jalan Raja Chulan and Jalan Parlimen.   

It added that the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) saw a 1-hour traffic crawl from Pandan Jaya heading to Melawati due to flash floods. – October 10, 2023
