News of MYAirline’s ‘new owner’ is beyond me: Loke

Transport minister says company yet to inform Mavcom details on possible takeover

7:36 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Transport Minister Anthony Loke said he is unaware of any potential change in ownership for low-cost carrier MYAirline.

Loke emphasised that MYAirline has not furnished any information to the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) regarding a possible takeover

“I do not know whether MYAirline will be taken over by anyone – it is beyond me,” he told a press conference at Pullman Hotel, today.

“If there is a change in shareholders, it must be informed to Mavcom. But so far, I understand that there has not been any information (on it),”

Regardless, Loke said it was entirely the company’s prerogative to change its ownership.

This followed speculation surrounding MYAirline’s chief executive Rayner Teoh’s recent resignation, in which he cited “health reasons” for his departure from the company.

Subsequently, media reports mentioned sources debunking that the Sarawak government would be acquiring the airline.

Meanwhile, Loke said that MYAirline would have to present any issues they face to Mavcom first, before the agency could provide any assistance.

Asked about the ministry’s strategies to enhance the profitability of Malaysia Airlines (MAS), Loke said they remain impartial and supportive of all airlines, aiming for the success of the aviation industry as a whole.

“We facilitate all airlines, we want them all to be profitable. Transport Ministry does not pick any particular airline (to support),”

“Of course, MAS is owned by the government through Khazanah, so it gets support from the government. But they are competing with any other airline,” he said.

In April, Malaysia Airlines Bhd reported a reduction in losses for 2022, marking a significant improvement compared to the previous year, with a net loss after tax of RM344 million, in contrast to RM1.65 billion in the prior year. – October 11, 2023
