Budget 2024: entertainment duty for sporting events, concerts by international artists reduced to 10% from 25%

Meanwhile, local artist performances are now exempted from duty

6:42 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Organisers of sporting events will rejoice with the reduction of entertainment duty to 10% from 25%, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the tabling of Budget 2024.

“This involves stage performances from international artists and other entertainment events such as movie screenings and sporting events,” he said.

Anwar added that performances from local artists are exempted from the duty, while for entrances to theme parks, family recreational centres, indoor theme parks, and simulators, the duty has been dropped to 5% from the previous rate of 25%.

Previously, sporting events like the upcoming Malaysian MotoGP Grand Prix in November have been hit hard by the high entertainment duty.

“At the moment, if you buy a RM200 ticket, it becomes RM250 when you add the 25% entertainment tax. It’s quite steep.

“We will be meeting with the Selangor government to further discuss on how to move forward on this issue,” said Sepang International Circuit chief executive officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif at the Malaysian MotoGP launch event last month. – October 13, 2023
