Education minister says strategies include regulating student registration, adding classrooms

KUALA LUMPUR – The Education Ministry’s efforts to reduce the prevalence of two-session schooling in the country have yielded promising results, its minister said.

In a parliamentary written response to Kuala Kedah MP Ahmad Fakhruddin Fakhrurazi, minister Fadhlina Sidek revealed that the number of schools conducting two sessions of schooling has been steadily decreasing.

“The Education Ministry is committed to ensuring that students can learn in a comfortable and conducive environment, enabling them to focus on their education.”

Aligned with the goals of the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025, the ministry has devised strategies to reduce the number of schools operating two sessions, she explained.

“These strategies encompass regulating student registrations at schools, expanding the number of classrooms in existing schools, and constructing new facilities as required and deemed suitable.” 

Fadhlina also said that the number of schools implementing two-session schooling in recent years has exhibited a steady decline, with 1,282 in 2018, 1,260 in 2019, 1,243 in 2020, and 1,210 in 2021.

“Therefore, the Education Ministry’s strategy to reduce the prevalence of two-session schools is making notable progress.

“The Education Ministry is confident that the ongoing efforts will continue to decrease the number of two-session schools without compromising the quality and comfort of the teaching and learning experience,” Fadhlina said. – October 17, 2023
