US embassy closes entrance ahead of another Gaza solidarity gathering

It cautions US citizens, advising them to avoid crowded areas, remain vigilant

KUALA LUMPUR – The United States embassy here will close its front entrance to all pedestrian traffic from 12pm onwards today, ahead of another solidarity gathering in support of the victims of Israel’s ongoing attack on Gaza.

The gathering is scheduled to start after Friday prayers at the Tabung Haji mosque, and participants will be walking along Jalan Tun Razak to the embassy.

The embassy has advised US citizens to avoid the front entrance for the duration of the demonstration, as well as to avoid crowds and be aware of their surroundings.

“This demonstration does not have a fixed end time, so US citizens should monitor local media for updates. Please remember that it is illegal for foreigners to participate in demonstrations in Malaysia.”

On Tuesday, an Israeli strike killed more than 500 Palestinians at Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City.

The high death toll following this spurred widespread international condemnation and protests at Israeli embassies in several countries.

Last Friday, some 1,000 participants gathered outside the embassy after 2pm to voice their solidarity for the Palestinian people and to submit a memorandum to the US government.

On Wednesday, more than 100 protesters gathered in front of the US embassy here in the evening in solidarity with the victims of Israel’s alleged attack on a hospital in Gaza, Palestine.

The gathering, which kicked off at around 8pm, led to the temporary closure by the police of approximately 100m of road leading to the embassy.

The situation became slightly tense when police barred participants from approaching the embassy.

Calm was restored when the police successfully managed the situation and requested that all participants limit their protest activities to 10pm. – October 20, 2023
