‘Stressed-out’ Muhyiddin seeks passport return for month-long family trip to London

In application to court, ex-PM cites importance of spending quality time with his family

6:15 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has filed an application on Monday (October 16) to retrieve his international passport for a family trip to the United Kingdom.

The application was filed via his counsel Messrs Chetan Jethwani & Co.

In his affidavit, the 76-year-old Muhyiddin said it is normal for his family to spend a month abroad every year.

“Therefore, the planning for vacation this year is (of) no exception. I would like to bring my family to London, UK at the end of this year for a vacation.

“This vacation is important, as I can spend quality time with my family seeing that it has been a stressful year for me and my family,” he said in his supporting documents for the application.

Muhyiddin said his trip will take place between December 15 and January 11, next year, and that he had purchased flight tickets for himself and his wife on the advice of his travel agent as getting tickets for large groups near the Christmas and New Year season would be challenging.

“I hope that the court could consider my application, so I can go for vacation and spend time with my family.

“I also intended to go to Singapore to undergo my health checkup as I believe the Mount Elizabeth Hospital has advanced technology that allows me to undergo a heart examination without going through a cardiac stress test on a treadmill.

“I was also advised by my counsels that the RM2 million bail paid by my sureties is to ensure my attendance in court, and my international passport surrendered to court is just an additional condition.”

Sessions court judge Azura Alwi fixed October 25 to hear this application.

Muhyiddin was the second former prime minister who shook the nation when he was charged with three corruption charges and four abuse of power charges in March this year.

Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Datuk Muhammad Jamil Hussin, however, granted Muhyiddin a discharge not amounting to an acquittal on his four counts of abuse of power charges, on account that the charges were defective.

He still faces three charges related to money laundering, amounting to RM200 million, connected to the Jana Wibawa project.

Muhyiddin, however, filed an application earlier this month to quash the three charges. – October 20, 2023
