TikTok censoring Palestine content? Comms Ministry to consult Wisma Putra, says Fahmi

This comes after users raise issue of posts containing certain words being removed

KUALA LUMPUR – Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil will likely be seeking guidance from Wisma Putra over several censorship issues with TikTok regarding the Israel-Palestine war. 

Fahmi said this came after an unsatisfactory meeting with the social media platform while seeking clarification on videos containing certain words being removed. 

“I see several TikTok users who raised the issue of the content being automatically taken down for including certain words, like ‘Hamas’. I have contacted TikTok for an explanation, but it was unsatisfactory. 

“Maybe I will seek Wisma Putra’s guidance on several matters and we will call (for another meeting),” he told reporters after the Freedom for Palestine rally at Dataran Merdeka here today. 

When asked whether social media outlets have contacted him about blocking content related to the war, Fahmi assured that none of the platforms have done so. 

“At this time, there is no censorship, especially on Facebook.”

Meanwhile, the Lembah Pantai MP said the government is striving to provide assistance for the people in Palestine, adding that more will follow suit. – October 22, 2023
