KUALA LUMPUR – The Fire and Rescue Department has confirmed that a minor explosion occurred at the Farmers’ Organisation Authority earlier today.

The incident took place on the fifth floor of the agency’s headquarters located on Jalan Sultan Salahuddin, here.

Meanwhile, on X, formerly known as Twitter, the national news agency posted a short video showing a group of individuals gathered outside the building.

In a statement, Fire and Rescue Department operation commander Rusdi Ismail confirmed that inspection of the scene showed that the minor explosion was caused by an underground cable causing a fire the size of 2 square meters.

He said the department received distress call regarding the explosion at 2pm, and one Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) and one Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) unit with seven officers has been mobilised to the scene.

He said that the team arrived nine minutes later after the call.

“The explosion did not affect the building structure and also the victims at the location.

“The repair work has been handed over to the building management for further action,” he said.

The department told Scoop that it received a distress call regarding the explosion at 2pm.

It also confirmed that no victims were involved in the explosion, as of 3pm.

“The report of a fire shows that the explosion involved an underground cable,” the department said.

“However, the electricity supply has been cut and people in the building were safely evacuated.” – October 24, 2023
