Palestinian envoy in M’sia urges world leaders to push for ceasefire in Gaza

Walid Abu Ali says recent strikes ‘left no safe haven’ for people seeking for shelter

4:45 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Palestinian Ambassador to Malaysia Walid Abu Ali has called on global leaders to advocate for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and establish a safe corridor for humanitarian aid.

He emphasised that the international community must unite to end the suffering of Palestinians and provide the necessary assistance to alleviate this humanitarian crisis.

Currently, the 2.3 million people in Gaza are effectively held hostage, struggling to meet even the most basic requirements for survival. Access to hospitals, electricity, and clean drinking water remains scarce.

“The closure of the Rafah Crossing Point further exacerbates the crisis, impeding the movement of vital humanitarian aid and isolating the Palestinian population.

“The recent military strikes have left no safe haven, with every square metre of Gaza under threat,” he told Bernama during a telephone conversation.

“As the situation in Palestine continues to unfold, it is imperative that the international community remains engaged and proactive in its efforts to address this pressing global concern.

“Palestinians are human beings, not animals. We deserve to be treated equally like any other citizens around the globe.”

The ambassador also highlighted the solidarity shown by Malaysians and their leader, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, and the fundraising efforts where a staggering RM81 million has been raised to enable Palestinians to receive the necessary support for survival and the reconstruction of their homeland.

He expressed his appreciation for tonight’s Malaysia Stands with Palestine rally at Axiata Arena Stadium, Bukit Jalil, where about 20,000 people are expected to join along with Anwar.

“Any Palestinian can’t complain about the great support of Malaysians. We are very much humbled by what you have done,” added Walid, who will also be participating in tonight’s rally.

He also urged Egypt, which controls the Rafah crossing, to use its influence to facilitate a humanitarian corridor that would enable Palestinians to benefit from the global support being raised.

The ambassador also commended the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation member countries for voicing their support for Palestine, adding that this solidarity comes at a crucial time when Israel’s actions in Gaza continue to draw international concern.

“The indiscriminate targeting of civilians and violation of international law cannot be ignored,” he said. – October 24, 2023
