KL-Karak highway to be widened to reduce traffic jams

Works Ministry to implement MLFF system at toll plazas for more efficient, smoother, and faster traffic flow

1:11 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The government plans to implement the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system at toll plazas along the Kuala Lumpur-Karak (KLK) highway to reduce the likelihood of traffic jams along its length.

Addressing the Dewan Rakyat today, deputy works minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad (Lipis-BN) said in order to implement the MLFF system, the ministry has approved the project to widen the KLK highway, starting from Gombak toll plaza to the Central Spine Road in Bentong, with work expected to commence within the second quarter of 2024.

“The proposal to widen the KL-Karak highway would provide a faster and more efficient system at toll plazas to solve the traffic jam woes, especially during the festive season, public holidays, and weekends.

“At the moment, the project is still at its early stage of design,” he said.

Abdul Rahman was answering Khairil Nizam Khirudin’s (PN-Jerantut) question on the ministry’s plan to solve traffic problems at Bentong and Gombak toll plaza.

He said the concession company appointed for the project, ANIH Berhad, is also in charge of setting up streetlights along the KLK highway, including the Gombak stretch and the Genting Sempah tunnel.

“We understand the problem because we are also using this road daily. During the weekends, from Lipis to Kuala Lumpur, which would normally take about two and a half hours, would take up to four hours because of the traffic jam.

“But if we open another emergency lane at the Gombak toll, there will be congestion in Kuala Lumpur up to Bentong. This is difficult, we must widen (the KLK highway) and implement the MLFF system. (That way) at least we can reduce the traffic congestion,” he added.

Earlier, Abdul Rahman said the ministry planned to increase the number of staff including those on standby and to dispatch Rela personnel to assist users at toll plazas in order to solve the traffic congestion problem. – October 25, 2023
