Putrajaya to expedite Sarawak’s renewable energy export to S’pore: Anwar

This is in line with both nations’s goals for collaboration in the area, PM adds

6:06 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Putrajaya will help to expedite the export of renewable energy from Sarawak to Singapore, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

He gave this commitment to his Singaporean counterpart, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the 10th bilateral leaders’ retreat in the republic today, adding that this would benefit both the peninsula and Sarawak.

“Of course, there is a commitment on the part of Malaysia to supply…we have agreed to our commitment to accelerate the proposal by Sarawak to export energy to Indonesia and Singapore,” Anwar said at a joint press conference with Lee in Singapore.

This is in line with both countries’ goals for energy collaboration, especially in the sharing of low-carbon and renewable energy technologies, carbon credits, as well as carbon capture and storage, he added.

In Anwar and Lee’s joint statement, the two leaders affirmed that Putrajaya would give its assistance in accelerating the process in ongoing talks for Singapore to import renewable energy from Sarawak.

Both leaders also reiterated their goal of strengthening regional interconnectivity with cross-border electricity trading initiatives, including the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project.

Last month, Sarawak stated its aim to provide Singapore with up to one gigawatt of renewable energy by 2032.

Sarawak Energy Bhd said negotiations in supplying renewable energy to the republic using submarine cables were also at an advanced stage. – October 30, 2023
