Boycott of Israel-linked brands has proven effective, says Palestinian envoy

Walid Abu Ali calls on Malaysians to keep shunning businesses that support Zionism

3:24 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Boycott measures undertaken against businesses and franchises linked with Zionism and the Israeli regime have proven to be effective, said the Palestinian ambassador to Malaysia.

Walid Abu Ali said these efforts could help minimise Palestinians’ suffering. “I do encourage Malaysians, Palestinians, Arabs, Muslims, those who believe in human rights and those who believe in democracy to do their minimum (efforts) by boycotting brands that support Israel,” he said during a press conference today.

“Israel is benefitting from so many brands that are all over the world.”

Walid said the boycotting of such brands has affected Israel’s economy, especially in the past three weeks.

“In the last three weeks, if you google, you can witness how much it’s affecting them economically.

“It can be a pressure to the Israeli government who practices terrorism against Palestine to realise that their actions affect their economy as well,” he added.

As such, he hoped Malaysians would create awareness to boycott such brands and products, especially with the assistance of social media.

Asked how such boycotts could be fine-tuned so as to not affect the Malaysian economy and its workers, Walid said the efforts vary from one country to another.

“I think it’s the responsibility of you all (the media) to increase the awareness (on the matter) to the public.”

Meanwhile, a local non-governmental organisation, the MyAqsa Foundation, is looking to present evidence with details of the war crimes allegedly committed by Israel against Palestinians to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Its legal team co-chair Lukman Sheriff Alias said the foundation will prepare the evidence in collaboration with the Palestine government and the Palestinian embassy in Malaysia.

“Our legal team will meet with the ICC prosecutor in The Hague to provide the prepared dossier of evidence, in hopes of expediting legal action against the tyranny of the Israeli Zionist regime,” he said.

Lukman also urged the ICC prosecutor to use their power to take immediate action against Israel based on the reports and evidence presented.
