KUALA LUMPUR – Police have arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with an alleged threat against Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek on social media.

In a statement, police’s criminal investigations department director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the local man, who carried the handle @syahmisufi8 on X, formerly Twitter, was nabbed yesterday.

Shuhaily said the application for remand was made under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code allowing for three days’ detention.

He said the arrest came following four police reports received on the incident.

Shuhaily added that the case was being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation by anonymous communication, as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities or services.

“The case is still under investigation and police have advised the public against making any speculation that could disrupt the probe,” he said.

“Police also wish to remind the public to be alert and vigilant towards sensitive issues when using social media, especially when it involves public safety and security.” – November 4, 2023
