PKR’s name, logo no longer listed on Liberal International’s website

However, Gerakan still mentioned on web page of liberal political grouping

KUALA LUMPUR – Liberal International has removed PKR’s name and logo from its website, a check on the organisation’s website shows.

Under its list of members in Asia, PKR is no longer mentioned. Perikatan Nasional component Gerakan, however, is still listed.

Liberal International is a global federation of “liberal political parties”.

Yesterday, PKR information chief Fahmi Fadzil said he had contacted the organisation with a request to remove the PKR name and logo from its website, as the party is not a member of the organisation.

“We are not a member and have never paid any membership fees to that body. Our name and our logo should be removed from the website,” said Fahmi at a Deepavali event in Lembah Pantai.

This follows Liberal International’s support for Israel in a statement on October 7, while condemning the attacks by Hamas on areas inside Israel’s border the same day.

Fahmi yesterday acknowledged that although Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is PKR president, had in the past attended some of Liberal International’s programmes on invitation, PKR had never been a member.

The party had also never been invited to attend the UK-based organisation’s annual general meetings, Fahmi added.

Gerakan, meanwhile, has slammed Liberal International for issuing a statement in support of Israel without first getting the consensus of affiliated political parties.

Gerakan secretary-general Loh Kah Yong was reported saying the party would withdraw from the organisation if it did not retract its statement supporting Israel. – November 5, 2023
